Neverfull Pillow: How to Keep Your Louis Vuitton Bag's Shape

The Neverfull is designed to collapse flat when empty — which is why every Neverfull loses its shape within a year without an internal pillow. Here's the sized insert that keeps MM, GM, and PM structured.

⏲ 5 min read Updated

The Louis Vuitton Neverfull is one of the most popular luxury bags in the world — and one of the most commonly damaged in storage. The reason is baked into the design: the Neverfull is meant to fold flat when empty. That "expandable tote" architecture is a feature during use and a liability the moment the bag goes into your closet.

Here's what happens to a Neverfull without an internal pillow, and the sized insert that keeps MM, GM, and PM structured for years.

Why the Neverfull Is Worse Than Most Bags in Storage

Most luxury handbags have some internal structure — reinforced base panels, stiffened sides, or rigid construction that holds shape even when empty. The Neverfull has almost none of this. The Monogram, Damier, and Epi canvas is coated but flexible. The vachetta base straps are decorative and structural, but not stiff. The interior is entirely unlined below the pouch attachment.

Empty, the Neverfull collapses in three ways:

  1. Vertical collapse. The tall sides fold inward toward the base, losing the boxy rectangular silhouette.
  2. Corner rounding. The four corners of the base soften and round off, giving the bag a "bell bottom" look at the base.
  3. Vachetta creasing. The vachetta base straps develop stress creases where the canvas folds against them, and those creases don't come out.

This happens fast. A Neverfull MM stored empty for six months looks visibly older than a Neverfull MM stored with a pillow, even if the pillow-stored bag has been carried twice as often.

The Right Pillow Size for Each Neverfull

The Neverfull comes in three sizes, and each needs a specifically sized pillow:

Neverfull Interior Pillow Size
PM 29 cm × 21 cm × 12 cm Small Tote
MM 31 cm × 28 cm × 17 cm Medium Tote
GM 39 cm × 32 cm × 19 cm Large Tote

Fabrinique's Individual Purse Pillow covers all three via the size selector on the product page. If you own multiple Neverfulls (a common pattern — one PM for evening, one MM for daily, one GM for travel), the 4-Piece Bundle is more economical.

The Neverfull Storage Routine

The Neverfull needs slightly more storage discipline than a structured bag because it collapses so readily. The correct routine:

  1. Empty the bag. Everything out — including the removable pouch (or leave it in as long as it doesn't press against a side).
  2. Undo the side cinch straps. Set the bag back to its "full" tote shape, not the cinched-down configuration.
  3. Insert the sized pillow. Slide it in, let it expand to fill the interior. The pillow should push gently outward against every wall — not compressed, not oversized.
  4. Store upright. The Neverfull has no feet, so it sits on the vachetta base. Never store it laid flat — the top of the bag develops creases and the interior canvas gets pressed against itself.
  5. Dust bag over the top. Louis Vuitton includes a dust bag with every purchase; use it.
Vachetta caveat. The vachetta base straps are the most vulnerable part of the Neverfull to environmental damage. Even with a pillow inside, protect the vachetta from direct sunlight, humidity, and moisture. See our vachetta care guide for the full protocol.

Reversing a Collapsed Neverfull

If your Neverfull is already showing shape damage — round corners, side creases, base warping — the pillow can partially correct it. Here's the recovery protocol:

  1. Insert the correctly sized pillow.
  2. Store the bag pillow-stuffed in a climate-controlled closet for 30-45 days.
  3. Check weekly — the corners will gradually push back outward as the canvas relaxes into the pillow's shape.

For sag that's been set-in for over a year, expect partial correction rather than full recovery. The canvas has developed memory in the collapsed position, and while the pillow will hold new shape going forward, some of the visible aging may be permanent.

What About Other LV Bags?

The same pillow works for other LV canvas bags with similar geometry — Speedy 25/30/35, OnTheGo, Keepall 45/50/55, All-In, and Delightful. Match the interior volume to the pillow size using the drop-down on the product page.

For collectors with 3+ LV bags, the 4-Piece Bundle covers a typical LV rotation (Speedy + Neverfull MM + OnTheGo + Keepall) at 40% off individual pricing.

Frequently asked questions

Why does the Neverfull lose its shape so quickly?
The Neverfull is intentionally designed to collapse flat when empty — that's part of its 'expandable tote' function. But that design means without internal support during storage, the corners round off, the vachetta base warps, and the sides develop permanent creases within 6-12 months of daily use.
What size pillow do I need for a Neverfull MM?
The Neverfull MM (31 cm × 28 cm × 17 cm) needs the Individual Pillow in the Medium Tote size — that's our standard tote dimension, which matches the MM's interior. GM needs Large Tote. PM needs Small Tote.
Will the pillow protect the vachetta trim?
Indirectly, yes. The pillow keeps the bag standing upright and evenly supported, which prevents the vachetta base straps from folding under weight and cracking. But vachetta also needs its own care — see our vachetta guide.
Can I use the pillow with the removable pouch inside?
Yes. The pouch usually sits at the base or against one side, and the pillow fills the remaining interior. Store the pouch inside the bag with the pillow — it keeps everything organized and preserves the pouch's shape too.
