The Louis Vuitton Speedy is one of the most iconic silhouettes in fashion — a soft, rounded, dome-shaped handbag that's been in continuous production since 1930. That iconic shape is also its structural weakness: the Speedy has no internal frame, no reinforced sides, and no stiffening. It's a canvas or leather pouch, and the only thing holding its shape when it's on your arm is what's inside it.
Empty the Speedy at the end of the day, and the shape starts collapsing immediately. Store it empty overnight, and by morning it's a flat pouch. Do this for a few months and the collapsed shape becomes memory in the canvas.
Here's the fix.
Why the Speedy Sags Worse Than Other LV Bags
Louis Vuitton's tote-shaped bags (Neverfull, OnTheGo) have flat panels that resist collapse in one direction. The Speedy's rounded dome has no flat surfaces at all — the entire shape is built from a continuous curved panel. Without internal support, that curve loses tension and the bag pancakes.
You'll see the collapse first in three specific ways:
- The dome flattens. The rounded top of the bag becomes soft and dips inward when the bag is set down.
- The base bows. The vachetta base curves inward as the bag's sides fold in on themselves.
- The handles droop. Without shape tension, the handles fall against the sides of the bag and develop creases at their anchor points.
The Sized Pillow for Each Speedy
| Speedy | Interior | Pillow Size |
|---|---|---|
| Speedy 25 | 25 cm × 19 cm × 15 cm | Small Tote |
| Speedy 30 | 30 cm × 21 cm × 17 cm | Small-Medium Tote |
| Speedy 35 | 35 cm × 23 cm × 18 cm | Medium Tote |
| Speedy 40 | 40 cm × 26 cm × 20 cm | Large Tote |
Fabrinique's Individual Purse Pillow covers all four sizes. Select from the drop-down on the product page.
The 30-Second Speedy Storage Routine
- Empty the bag completely.
- Wipe the interior lightly with a dry cloth.
- Insert the pillow flat and let it expand into the dome.
- Zip the top closed (this preserves zipper alignment and blocks dust).
- Slide into the dust bag and store upright on a shelf.
The Bandoulière Variants
The Speedy Bandoulière (available in 25, 30, and 35) has the same interior dimensions as the non-Bandoulière — the shoulder strap doesn't change the bag's shape. Use the same pillow size.
Store the Bandoulière strap separately if possible, or fold it inside the bag with the pillow. Don't let the strap hang outside the dust bag — it develops creases where it folds against the dust bag's opening.
Reversing a Collapsed Speedy
If your Speedy is already showing sag — flattened dome, drooping handles, bowed base — pillow correction works well because the canvas is thin and responds quickly. Protocol:
- Insert the correctly sized pillow.
- Position the handles upright, folded away from the sides.
- Store pillow-stuffed for 14-21 days in a climate-controlled space.
- Check every few days — you'll see the dome push back outward as the canvas relaxes into the pillow's curve.
For Speedys older than 5-10 years with deeply set slouch, expect 60-70% correction. The canvas has probably developed permanent memory in some areas, but the pillow will still restore most of the silhouette and prevent further collapse.
The Vachetta Question
The Speedy's vachetta base and handles are the most fragile part of the bag. A pillow doesn't directly protect vachetta — but it prevents the canvas from folding against the vachetta straps, which is one of the main causes of vachetta stress cracks. Pillow + climate control + light protection is the full vachetta preservation setup.
