Choosing Materials That Contact a Handbag Lining During Storage

Anything placed inside a handbag for storage may remain in contact with the lining for long periods. That makes cleanliness, surface texture, color transfer, and fit more important than marketing terms such as “archival,” “museum grade,” or “professional grade” unless those claims are supported by specific documentation.

Choose smooth contact surfaces

Inspect anything that will touch the lining. Avoid exposed fasteners, rough seams, sharp edges, brittle materials, or obvious abrasive surfaces.

Be cautious with color transfer

Dark or strongly dyed materials can be a concern against light interiors. Colorfastness depends on the actual textile, dye, moisture, friction, and length of contact, so do not assume every fabric in a material category behaves identically.

Keep storage materials clean and dry

Do not place damp, dirty, oily, or strongly scented materials inside a handbag. Replace or clean reusable storage products according to their care instructions if they become soiled.

Paper products

Printed newspaper should be avoided because ink and residue may transfer. If using tissue temporarily, choose clean material and avoid packing it tightly. Acid-free tissue is commonly used for conservation applications, but suitability still depends on the specific bag and how it is used.

Plastic materials

Plastic can be useful for many storage applications, but sealing a damp handbag or damp stuffing material inside a non-breathable environment is not a good substitute for addressing moisture. Also avoid rigid plastic shapes that create concentrated pressure.

Fabric and soft inserts

A smooth fabric shell around soft fill can provide gentle interior support. The finished insert should fit without stretching the bag, and it should be inspected periodically for damaged seams, residue, odor, or color transfer.

Fabrinique Purse Pillows are intended for soft storage support. Use Find Your Bag to choose a recommended size rather than intentionally oversizing the insert.

Model-specific sizing

For handbags with dedicated Fabrinique fits, use the model-specific guide: Speedy 25, 30 and 35, Keepall 45, 50, 55 and 60, Birkin 25, 30 and 35, and Kelly 25, 28 and 32.
